After the piece is cast, our expert metal workers move on to welding and meticulous surface finishing. Gates and vents are removed and tooled down to disappear. Larger work is cast in pieces and must be welded back together. We work meticulously to blend any signs of the casting process to perfectly match the original contour and texture. Once all metal finishing is complete, the piece is cleaned and prepped for patina.
The patina is a chemical reaction with the surface of the metal resulting in a variety of colors and patterns. This effect is created with diluted acids, applied in different styles and combinations, to create a multitude of tones, hues, and shades. Patinas will occur naturally on the metal reacting with the atmosphere if left bare; this is why all patinas are sealed with wax or lacquer to prevent further oxidation and preserve the beautiful finish.
